More than 100,000 residents of the city of Choluteca will benefit from improved drinking water systems.

The population of Choluteca will benefit from a substantial improvement in the drinking water service, both in quantity and quality of the vital liquid, through the project "Improvement in the water collection and purification system in Choluteca", executed by Fundación Agrolíbano, with the technical and financial support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (COSUDE) through the Territorial Water Governance Program in Region 13 of the Gulf of Fonseca (PGHTR13GF), under the supervision of Aguas de Choluteca.

The project includes water collection works on the Choluteca River, the city's main source of supply, and the construction of a water treatment tank that will contribute to providing safe water for human consumption. The city has had a drinking water crisis due to the vulnerability of the river's water collection system and the poor purification of groundwater. The project provides a solution to these identified problems.

The sustainability of this project will be guaranteed by Aguas de Choluteca, the entity receiving the project that will provide maintenance as the system's administrator.

In this way, it contributes to the goals of SDGs 1, 3, 6, 11 and 17 by reducing deprivations linked to multidimensional poverty, promoting health conditions by improving access to drinking water, reducing losses caused by natural disasters to the water system and strengthening multi-stakeholder alliances to achieve the objectives.
